NA panel asks LEAs to act against HR violations

ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly Standing Committee on Human Rights on Wednesday expressed concern over the violations of human rights during the recent years, directed the law enforcement agencies to take stringent measures, especially in cases of political victimisation, without any discrimination.

The committee emphasised the need for effective legislation to safeguard the rights of parliamentarians. The NA panel’s meeting was held at the Parliament House, which was presided over by its Chairman Sahibzada Muhammad Hamid Raza.

The NA Standing Committee on Human Rights also expressed concern over the increasing cases of violence against children and women and directed the Ministry of Human Rights to provide complete detail of women and children prisoners in the next meeting.

The committee also decided to visit to provincial Department of Prisons along with media to witness the ground realties of the prisoners. It deferred the briefing of the Ministry of Human Rights and its attached departments till the next meeting due to the absence of minister and secretary concerned.
