PESHAWAR: Secretary Information of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Sheikh Waqas Akram on Tuesday flayed the Punjab government after alleging that the province was being governed like a jungle.
“The rulers in Punjab consider themselves kings. People are being abducted without impunity,” he said while speaking at a press conference.
He condemned the raid on the house of Member National Assembly Mian Ghaus Muhammad alleging that he had been abducted. “When political workers are unsafe, how can ordinary citizens be secure?” he asked.
“He was picked up on Monday at 8:41 pm and has not been produced in court,” Sheikh Waqas said, adding his only crime was his loyalty to PTI and its founder.
“It is unfortunate that this man was taken from his home in Lahore. I ask the [National Assembly] speaker to respond to this incident.” Give us back our assembly member,” he demanded.
“If any harm comes to Mian Ghaus Muhammad, the Punjab government and its chief minister will be held responsible,” Sheikh Waqas warned.
The PTI leader said Mian Ghaus was the person who resisted the 26th Amendment and stood firm under pressure. He alleged that the MNA in question was being pressured to leave PTI.
“When even provincial and national assembly members are unsafe, what bigger embarrassment could there be?” he asked, demanding action against those responsible for the happening.”
He criticized the government on the Prevention of Electronic Crimes (PECA) Act, saying there was no consultation on it. “PTI stands with journalists on this issue,” he asserted.
Sheikh Waqas said his party would launch a movement, bringing political parties together to oppose the act. He denied differences in the party and said that there was no factionalism within PTI, and there never was.
