KARACHI: Chief Commissioner Regional Tax Office (RTO) 1 Dr Faheem Mohammad has highlighted the jewellery sector’s extremely low tax contribution and called for a significant increase in registrations. He said that the sector’s disappointing tax collection figures are neither in the state’s interest nor beneficial for the industry itself.
He made these remarks during a meeting with a delegation from the All Pakistan Jewellers Manufacturers Welfare Association (APJMWA), led by Muhammad Afzal, on Wednesday. During the meeting, the APJMWA chairperson requested the chief commissioner’s assistance in resolving issues related to export licences from the Export Promotion Bureau and sales tax registration with the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR).
The chief commissioner assured the delegation that sales tax registrations with the FBR would be expedited. However, he clarified that export licences do not fall under the FBR’s jurisdiction.
Both the chief commissioner and the APJMWA delegation agreed to hold frequent meetings and exchange valuable information to keep industry stakeholders informed of business regulations and relevant updates. The RTO-1 Karachi will establish dedicated teams to maintain continuous liaison with the jewellers’ association, not only to bridge the gap between both sides but also to foster a more cooperative relationship.
