LAHORE: As preparations for the 35th National Games intensify, the Sports Board Punjab conducted hockey and boxing trials on Thursday at the National Hockey Stadium and Body Contact Centre respectively. The trials attracted dozens of aspiring athletes, all vying for a coveted place in Punjab’s official contingent for the prestigious event set to be held in Karachi from May 1 to 9.

The trials were personally overseen by Director General Sports and Youth Affairs Punjab Khizar Afzaal Chaudhry, who reaffirmed the department’s commitment to transparent selection and athlete development.

“All team trials across Punjab are being held on pure merit. Only the best-performing and highly talented players are being selected for the National Games,” said DG Khizar Afzaal while speaking to reporters at the venue.

The female hockey trials saw enthusiastic participation from over 60 players representing various divisions of the province. Simultaneously, 35 boxers showcased their skills and fighting spirit in their respective categories.

Top officials, including Director Admin Dr. M Kaleem and Director Sports Rana Nadeem Anjum, were also present to observe the process and ensure transparency in selection. The evaluation process focused on core performance metrics such as skill, stamina, tactical understanding, and match temperament.

DG Khizar Afzaal Chaudhry expressed satisfaction over the level of talent observed during the trials. “Several fresh and promising hockey players have emerged during the trials, which is a very encouraging sign for the future of sports in Punjab. Our training camps are providing these athletes with excellent coaching, fitness routines, and facilities to help them prepare for top-tier competition.”

With the National Games just weeks away, the finalized squads will now move into intensive training camps under the supervision of Sports Board Punjab’s expert coaches. The emphasis in these camps will be on refining techniques, building physical endurance, and fostering teamwork to enhance Punjab’s chances of medal glory at the national level.

The trials are part of a broader campaign by Sports Board Punjab to ensure fair representation and competitive readiness across all sports disciplines. The board’s proactive approach, including the direct involvement of top officials, is being widely appreciated for promoting sports transparency and excellence across the province.
