Pakistan thrash West Indies in ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifiers match

LAHORE: Pakistan strengthened their World Cup qualification hopes with a comprehensive 65-run victory over the West Indies in the ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifier at Gaddafi Stadium on Monday evening.

The convincing win propelled Pakistan to the top of the points table with six points from three straight victories, significantly enhancing their chances of securing a place in the World Cup scheduled to be held in India later this year.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, Pakistan posted a competitive total of 191 runs before being bowled out in 49.5 overs. The innings was anchored by opener Sidra Ameen, who displayed remarkable patience and skill to top-score with 54 runs off 94 balls, including four boundaries.

Several other Pakistani batters made valuable contributions, with Muneeba Ali scoring 33 runs and wicketkeeper Sidra Nawaz adding 23. All-rounder Aliya Riaz chipped in with 20 runs, while Omaima Sohail (16), captain Fatima Sana (15), and Diana Baig (14) made useful lower-order contributions.

The West Indies bowling attack maintained discipline throughout, preventing Pakistan from posting an even larger total. Spinners Afy Fletcher and captain Hayley Matthews claimed two wickets each, while Aaliyah Alleyne, Karishma Ramharack, and Sheneta Grimmond picked up one wicket apiece.

Chasing 192 for victory, the West Indies batting lineup crumbled under sustained pressure from Pakistan’s bowling attack, managing only 126 runs before being dismissed in 39.2 overs.

Captain Fatima Sana led from the front with an outstanding bowling performance, claiming three crucial wickets for just 16 runs. She received excellent support from spinners Nashra Sandhu (2-31) and Rameen Shamim (2-26), while Sadia Iqbal chipped in with one wicket.

Despite resistance from Aaliyah Alleyne (22), Shabika Gajnabi (21), Jannillea Glasgow (18), and Stafanie Taylor (17), the West Indies were never truly in the hunt as Pakistan’s bowlers kept control of the game throughout the innings.

The victory puts Pakistan in a commanding position to qualify for the World Cup, with their remaining group matches now taking on added significance as they look to maintain their perfect record in the tournament.
