Former Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed recently reflected on his team’s historic 2017 victory over India, as the Green Shirts prepare to take on the Men in Blue in their much anticipated International Cricket Council (ICC) Champions Trophy match in Dubai on tomorrow.
Sarfaraz vividly remembers lifting the ICC Champions Trophy, a moment forever etched in his memory.
“I had just requested the boys to let me lift the trophy for a moment before everyone joined in. These cherished memories resurface every year when June 18 arrives,” he shared.
He recalled the pressure he faced during his debut as captain against India on June 4, 2017, where Pakistan suffered a heavy 124-run defeat under the DLS method.
However, the team demonstrated resilience, overcoming challenges, including bad weather that hindered their practice ahead of the match against South Africa.
In a remarkable comeback back then, Pakistan secured a 19-run win (DLS method) on June 7, 2017.
Momentum built as Pakistan stunned hosts England in the semi-final on June 14, securing an 8-wicket victory in Cardiff. Sarfaraz noted the overwhelming support Pakistan received in England, highlighting how the team did a lap of honor to acknowledge the fans.
The final on June 18 at The Oval remains one of the most iconic moments in Pakistan cricket history.
Recalling a conversation with New Zealand’s Tim Southee, Sarfaraz mentioned how Southee referred to the final as an “easy win” for Pakistan. Sarfaraz, however, countered, emphasizing that such victories are never easy and require immense effort and resilience.
He further reflected on the significance of such achievements for any cricketer, expressing gratitude for being part of history.
“Every player dreams of winning a title that is remembered for a lifetime,” he said.
Looking ahead, Sarfaraz expressed his excitement for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, which will be hosted in Pakistan after 29 years. He highlighted the country’s preparations, stating that the grounds are in excellent shape and the nation is eagerly anticipating the tournament.
“We hope Pakistan will successfully defend their crown on home soil,” he added.
As Pakistan and India prepare for another fierce battle tomorrow, Sarfaraz’s reflections serve as both a reminder of past glory and a source of inspiration for the current team to create new history.
