PESHAWAR: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Sheikh Waqas Akram said on Thursday that the tenure of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja has ended and his party consistently faced difficulties under this official.
According to Geo News, speaking to reporters he said the role of the current CEC had always been disappointing.
A complaint against the CEC had been filed with the Supreme Judicial Council,” he added, saying the complaint was filed by him and Umar Ayub with a long list of grievances.
The PTI leader accused the CEC of playing a key role in implementing Form 47 and failing to comply with the Supreme Court’s larger bench decision. He warned that accountability for these actions would be inevitable.
The complaint alleged that the PTI founder was deliberately targeted and that the reserved seat issue in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was unnecessarily complicated.
He stated that PTI’s electoral symbol, the bat, was taken away and that the pre-poll rigging had allegedly been carried out. “Despite this, PTI supporters remained committed to voting for the party founder,” he added.
Sheikh Waqas claimed that there was no level playing field in the last general elections, asserting that PTI faced severe challenges in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa even before the polls. He urged the Supreme Judicial Council to include this issue in its upcoming meeting’s agenda.
The PTI leader alleged that the worst crackdown in history was taking place in Sindh, Punjab, and Balochistan. “How long will you suppress protests?” he questioned, claiming that PTI lawmakers’ homes in Punjab were being raided.
He announced that a public gathering would be held in Swabi on February 8 and expressed optimism about the capabilities of the newly appointed provincial president of the party, Junaid Akbar.
Sheikh Waqas also alleged that individuals delivering food to imprisoned PTI workers were being arrested and that as soon as one case was resolved, another was filed.
He urged the government to act independently rather than under external influence and called on the chief justice of Pakistan to take notice of the situation.
